There are eight SDGs in particular that have been identified by African Clean Up Initiative as particularly relevant to the RecyclesPay Project. They are SDGs 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 13 and 17.

#RecyclesPay project is an initiative that promotes social, economical and environmental sustainability.

Below is the breakdown of the crux of #RecyclesPay Project:

GOAL 1 – NO POVERTY

With RecyclesPay, children that have found it difficult to acquire quality education as limited by cost of tuition now have an alternative form of payment to be in school and learn. Parents can now pay their wards’ fees with recyclables.

GOAL 3 – GOOD HEALTH

RecyclesPay project is an initiative that promotes sustainable health as it ensures healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. It is a known fact that indiscriminate littering of PET bottles has resulted into various environmental hazards which in-turn affects our health. However, with Recycle Pay, environmental pollutions caused by PET bottles will be reduced to the barest minimum thus fostering good health in communities.

GOAL 4 – QUALITY EDUCATION

According to UBEC (Universal Basic Education) (2018), the population of Out of School Children in Nigeria has risen from 10.5 million in 2015 to 13.2 million in 2018. This statistic is alarming as these children do not have the opportunity to develop physically, socially and mentally. The importance of education cannot be over emphasized as it gives and open up people to the skills and knowledge, needed to compete favourable in life. With RecyclePay, children will now be able to have access to quality education as recyclables will be traded for school fees (that is, money gotten from the recyclables will be used in paying schools fees and educational materials). Hence, RecyclesPay project seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

GOAL 6 – CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

It has been stated that “a clean and healthy environment encourages productivity and improves lives”. The menace caused by waste materials like PET bottles, polythene bags, aluminum cans, etc. is so enormous as it pollutes environment (which includes water, land and air.). This pollution in turn affects our right to getting clean and sustainable essentials like water, clean environment etc. Recyclepay Project is set out to address the issue of indiscriminate littering of recyclables like plastics aluminum cans etc. in the environment thereby reducing the pollution caused by these and promote sustainable sanitation in the communities..

GOAL 8 – GOOD JOBS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

RecyclesPay project is creating job opportunities for people that wants to go into the business of recycling because the PET bottles that the parents bring to the school in exchange for their school fees is eventually handed over to recycling ventures. This project promote sustained inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

GOAL 12 – RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

Through this project RecyclesPay project producers of PET bottles will now be more committed to the Extended Producer Responsibility. This now gives them an avenue to be more environmentally responsible in dealing with the PET bottles they produced.

Goal 13 – CLIMATE ACTION

In majority of our communities, wastes are being burnt which contributes to waste based generated greenhouse gases which in turn contributes to climate change. However, RecyclesPay project is taking urgent action to combat climate change and it’s impacts by harvesting recyclables from the environment thereby eliminating their contribution to climate change. That is, the waste harvested will go through a resource recovery process which is a key element of sustainable waste management and sustainability as a whole.

Goal 17 – PARTNERSHIP FOR THE GOALS

RecyclesPay project is an avenue to bring all the key stakeholders together to proffer solutions for sustainable waste management. This partnerships will be a springboard to ensuring and promoting sustainability that will have a lasting effect on our children and the environment at large.

AFRICAN CLEAN UP INITIATIVE look forward to working with other organizations, sustainable development goals advocate and promoters in achieving the mission of the RecyclesPay project; committed to support 10,000 children from dropping out of school by the year 2025.
